Mr. Turkey and Thanksgiving are basically synonymous. While this festive occasion is incomplete without this beloved bird, the side dishes play a big role in adding flavor, flair and color to the dinner table. Preparing the turkey takes a lot of time, especially if you don’t want to serve it all dried out rather tender and succulent. While you’re busy managing the temperature and juices of the turkey, following are few side dishes that you can prepare in a snap of a finger. These won’t take a lot of your time and still will look and taste mighty delicious as part of your Thanksgiving dinner table. Give them a try and let us know how they turned out.

Buttermilk Corn Bread


  • ½ cup butter
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • Pinch of salt

Buttermilk Corn Bread Recipe

Melt butter in a sauce pan and add in sugar. Add eggs and beat well until blended. Add baking soda to buttermilk and stir the mixture into the saucepan. Mix cornmeal, flour and salt until well blended and no lumps remain. Pour batter into a pan (8 inches, well-greased). Bake in a preheated oven over 30 minutes. Check with a fork to see if it comes out clean. If not, put in the oven again for 10 minutes. Enjoy this center-of-the-table attraction with whipped cream or even crème cheese icing.

  • 2 kilos of sweet potatoes (cubed of thick-sliced)
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tbs. condense milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup crème cheese.
  • 3 cup marshmallows
  • Ground cinnamon, to taste
  • Ground nutmeg, to taste
  • Pinch of salt

In a large pot, boil potatoes for 15 minutes, or until well boiled. Cool down, peel and cut into either cubes or thick slices. In a separate skillet, melt butter and add sugar. Add condense milk and stir for some time at low heat until the sauce becomes gooey and brown. Add cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, marshmallows and crème cheese. Mix quickly and well. Now add the potatoes in and stir well. Now transfer to a pre-greased baking dish and put into a pre-heated oven for 15 minutes. Take it out and top it with mini marshmallows and heat it in the oven until the marshmallows turn golden brown. Serve!

You will need:

  • Oil for deep-frying
  • 1 cup flour, sifted well
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 pinches of salt
  • ¼ tsp. sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tbs. melted shortening
  • 1 whole can kernel corn, drained and a little mashed

Heat oil at 360 degrees for deep frying in a cast iron skillet. Now add flour, salt, sugar and baking powder in a bowl. In a separate bowl, add egg, milk and corn. Pour this mixture into your flour to create a batter. Now drop 1 spoonful of batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown.

You will need:

  • 1 tbs. oil
  • 3 cups vegetable stalk
  • 1 tbs. unsalted butter
  • Salt, nutmeg and ground pepper, to taste.
  • ½ cup diced onion
  • ¾ cup potatoes
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ¾ cup diced carrots
  • 4 cups peeled and cubed butternut squash.
  • 1/3 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1/3 cup cheddar cheese
  • 1/3 cup cream cheese
  • 1 chicken cube/ 2 tsp. chicken powder

In a pot, add oil and butter together. Cook the onions in it until tender. Mix carrots, potatoes, squash and chicken cubes into the pot and add in the vegetable stock. Let it simmer for some time until the vegetables are soft. Now put the entire mixture in a blender and blend until it forms a puree. Pour the puree into a skillet and add heavy cream and all 3 cheeses. Season with nutmeg, ground pepper and salt; Stir until the cheeses melt. Serve hot and steaming!
